UK postcodes are postal codes with letters and numbers utilized by the Royal Mail to deliver mail accordingly.
The UK has a total of 121 postcode areas, 30 million postal addresses, and 1.8 million postcodes.

UK ZIP Code Format
The postcode is made up of two parts: the Outward Code and the Inward Code. The first part of the postcode contains the Outward Code to indicate the postcode area and district.
It is composed of two to four alphanumeric codes which look like AB13, B48, or CH1, for example.
The second part of the postcode contains the Inward Code, which comes after a space following the Outward Code.
It comprises three alphanumeric codes to identify the postcode sector and postcode unit. The Inward Code is needed to know the street, property, or organization.

How Do Post Codes Work
With the help of postcodes, mail can be easily sorted out either manually by staff or automatically by machines.
It has been a reliable delivery system to organize bundles of mail into the correct delivery bag and then to the proper post office.
Letters are first sorted according to the Outward Code and are further sorted again according to the Inward Code.
If the postcode is incomplete, the postcode is usually fixed by adding the correct code according to the post town name written on the envelope or package.
Mail is routed via mailing vehicles, planes, or trains, and then delivered by the mailman to the corresponding address. UK postcodes come in three types: unique, post office box, and standard.
Unique postcodes are assigned to a single address, business, or organization, whereas post office box codes are for PO Boxes.
The rest of the postcodes are considered standard for regular addresses. Postcodes are not only used for delivering mail, but for determining geographical zones and demographic profiling.
