The Difference between Black Cab and Minicab London

Black Cab London

Black taxis or cabs are metered taxis you can hire in the street. The type of car it uses is a hackney carriage that comes in different models such as TX4 or TX2.

Hackney carriages or hacks are vehicles that are purposely built as a taxi for hire.

Although it is common to find black taxis, it also comes in a variety of colors such as red, gray, and white. It is the only taxi you can call on the street or ride at taxi stands without a pre-booking.

However, you should only ride licensed Black Cabs, which are usually indicated with a green or yellow badge worn by the driver and a green or yellow license attached to the front and rear windshields of the vehicle.

A green badge and license indicate that the driver is licensed to drive in all areas of London, whereas a yellow badge and license indicate that driver can only operate in local suburban locations.

Aside from the driver’s badge and license, authorized Black Taxis should have a white taxi plate on the vehicle’s rear.

The taxi plate should have the license number and expiration, vehicle registration number, and passenger capacity.

Minicab London

Minicabs are private hire vehicles available for pre-booking. Aside from minicabs, you can also hire other types of private hire vehicles such as chauffeurs, limousines, and executive cars.

Unlike Black Taxis, private hire vehicles do not run on a meter and have an estimated fare that must be indicated before the trip.

Private hire vehicles are not hailed on the street and must be booked in advance to get a ride. Before starting your journey, check if the vehicle is TfL-licensed.

All private hire bookings should have all the information you need such as vehicle registration mark, license number, driver’s name, and a picture of the driver.

To know if a private hire is licensed, check for the Private Hire Driver ID and a yellow license disc attached to the front and rear windshields.

The yellow disc should display the TfL license number and expiration, vehicle registration number, and passenger capacity. You may encounter some vehicles with a Pre-booked only sticker, however, this is not an indication of a licensed vehicle.

How Much Are Taxis in London

The fare is calculated according to your total taxi time and distance. Moreover, it also depends on the three standard tariff times: Tariff 1, Tariff 2, and Tariff 3. For longer journeys reaching six miles or more, it is often called Tariff 4 and is given a different rate.

All Tariffs have a minimum charge of £3.80. Refer to the table below for the list of estimated fares of the three tariffs. In summary, the three tariffs cover the following:

  • Tariff 1 is from Monday to Friday from 05:00 am to 08:00 pm.
  • Tariff 2 is during the weekday from 08:00 pm to 10:00 pm and on the weekend from 05:00 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Tariff 3 is from 10:00 pm to 05:00 am on any day and anytime on public holidays.

How to Get a Taxi in London

There are several ways to get a taxi or private hire vehicle, either by pre-booking via call or online or simply hailing a taxi on the street.

Black Taxis have a yellow “taxi” or “for hire” sign on the front of the vehicle. If the sign is lit up, it means the taxi is empty and available for hire.

If you plan to get a Black Taxi, you can also go to a taxi rank and ride the first taxi lined up. Refer to the table below of taxi ranks available in each London borough.

Alternatively, pre-booking is another option done by calling the Black Cab London number of any licensed taxi company.

Get the full list of London taxi numbers from Transport for London (TfL). If you prefer to ride a private hire vehicle, search for licensed private hire companies that are available in your location first.

Keep in mind not all private hire companies operate in all areas of London and that there may be designated areas they can operate.

Lastly, you can download taxi apps in London such as Uber, FREE NOW, and Gett to get a private ride to any destination.

With taxi apps, all you need to do is sign up and create an account, and register a payment option. Afterward, simply select your current location and your desired drop-off location and wait for the taxi to arrive.
