River Bus London Stops and Zones
The River Bus London serves 24 piers out of 34 London River piers. Similar to the London Overground and London Underground lines like the Central line, its stops are divided into zones to determine the fare for each travel.
There are three fare zones: West Zone, Central Zone, and East Zone. The zones are different from London fare zones.
The more zones you travel, the higher the fare. For instance, if you are traveling to the West Zone only, you need a ticket for the West Zone.
However, if you are traveling from the West Zone to the Central Zone, you need a West and Central ticket. Check the list of stations, stops, and piers to learn more.

London River Bus Route
The River Bus runs from Putney Pier (western terminus) to the Barking Riverside Pier (eastern terminus).
It covers four routes: RB1, RB2, RB4, and RB6. Each route services specific piers and may change whether it is eastbound or westbound.
Although the River Bus operates daily, there are some piers and routes that run on either weekdays or weekends only.
The table below shows the extended routes for RB1 and RB2. For easy reference, refer back to the River Bus London Map above showing each route indicated in purple, green, yellow, and brown colored lines.
RB1
The main route of River Bus is RB1, which offers a daily service for Central and East Zones. RB1 runs from London Eye (Waterloo) Pier to North Greenwich Pier.
During weekday peak mornings, it extends to Battersea Power Station Pier and Vauxhall (St George Wharf) Pier. On the weekend, RB1 calls for Royal Wharf Pier, Woolwich (Royal Arsenal) Pier, and Barking Riverside Pier.
RB2
RB2 runs a daily service from Battersea Power Station Pier to Greenwich Pier. The route operates on weekdays during off-peak times and on weekends.
On the weekend, the additional pier added after Greenwich Pier is North Greenwich Pier.
RB4
RB4 runs from Canary Wharf Pier to Doubletree Docklands Nelson Dock Pier, and vice versa. It is an East Zone route that offers daily services from the two piers.
RB6
RB6 is a weekday service only, covering piers between Putney Pier and Canary Wharf Pier.
It is included in the Central and West Zones. Keep in mind that the eastbound and westbound routes of RB6 do not cover the same piers.

Payment Options for River Bus Fare
There are several ways to purchase a River Bus ticket.
You can go straight to the pier and pay using Pay as you go cards such as a Contactless Card, Oyster Card, and Visitor Oyster Card.
If you do not have a Pay as you go card, you can purchase a paper ticket at the pier for a higher price.
Alternatively, you can buy one-way, round trip, or unlimited season tickets either online, Thames Clippers Tickets App, or Uber app.
Students, children, seniors, and those with a Travelcard or Freedom Pass can get discounts or free rides on the River Bus. Here is a quick overview of each payment option.
Oyster Card
Oyster Cards uses a Pay as you go system where you only pay for the journey you take and top up to add credit to your balance.
However, keep in mind that topping up at the pier is not possible. Thus, make sure you have enough balance to pay for your River Bus fare before arriving.
You can use it to get cheaper fares on River Buses, as well as other public transportation such as London buses, Tube, trams, London Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, and most National Rail services.
With the help of TfL Oyster and contactless app, you can keep track of your Oyster Card account.
Refer to the Complete Guide To Oyster Card to learn more.
Contactless Card
If you do not like to purchase a payment card, you can use your bank card as long as it functions as a Contactless Card.
Inquire with your bank issuer if your debit or credit card is a Contactless Card. You will know if it is one when you see a Contactless symbol on your bank card, which is similar to a signal symbol with four curved lines.
Most bank cards work as a Contactless payment, however, some non-UK bank cards may not work.
To learn more about Contactless Cards, read the guide How to Use Contactless Card on London Transport.
Travelcard
A Travelcard offers unlimited journeys for a fixed price to most public transportation, including London Underground, London Overground, buses, trams, DLR, Elizabeth Line, and most National Rail services.
However, if you want to ride the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers River Bus, you can only get a 33% discount for One-way and Round Trip fares.
The validity of Travelcards can be one day, one week, one month, or one year.
Get more detailed information on Travelcards with the guide Get Unlimited Travel With A London Travel Card
Visitor Oyster Card
If you are a traveler outside London, you can purchase a Visitor Oyster Card in advance. The card functions like an Oyster Card using a Pay as you go system. The only difference is the non-refundable £5 deposit on top of the credit upon purchasing.
Visitor Oyster Cards can be used on buses, trams, Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and most National Rail services in London.
Get a Visitor Oyster Card through the Visitor Shop website, locations outside London, and from your country.
Read more information on the differences between all cards with the guide Visitor Oyster Card Vs Oyster Card Vs Travel Card Vs Contactless Card.
Online and App Purchase
You can purchase a ticket in advance via Thames Clippers Tickets App, Uber app, and Online. With Thames Clippers Tickets App, you can get up to a 71% discount when you purchase season tickets.
If using the Thames Clippers website, you can buy Single and Return tickets, as well as other types of tickets such as River Roamer and East Zone River Roamer for unlimited journeys.
If you are already an Uber user, you can purchase a ticket straight from the app. Online and app purchases give you 22% discounted tickets.
Pier Ticket Office or Machine
If you are not able to pay for the fare through the above-mentioned ways, the last option is to buy a ticket at the pier’s ticket office or machine.
However, you will not be able to get a discounted fare since ticket offices and machines only sell standard-priced tickets. Here is a table of the standard fare price for pier ticket purchases.

Planning to use a Pay as you go card or Travelcard for your journeys with River Bus?
Refer to the Pay as you go Caps and Travelcard Adult Rates table below to keep you informed of the initial prices. Once you purchase any of the payment cards below, then the River Bus rates for one-way and round-trip tickets will apply.
The table below shows the standard rate for Pay as you go caps and Travelcard for London buses, trams, Tube, DLR, most Elizabeth line services, London Overground, and most National Rail services.
For these public transportation options, the stations are divided into nine zones, from Zone 1 to Zone 9. Caps on your card serve as a limit to avoid overspending.
When adding a cap to your card, you need to select the zones it covers. The more zones your card covers, the higher the rates.
If you do not want to put caps, you can still pay for your trip using single Pay as you go rates. Use the Single fare finder tool to know the fare for your destination.

How to Pay for River Bus Fare
If using a Pay as you go card, touch in on the yellow card reader upon boarding and touch out when exiting.
Keep in mind that an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers employee will instruct you when to touch in as they need to see and confirm if your payment pushed through. To learn more about how to pay, read TfL’s touch in and touch out guide.
It is not allowed to touch in and touch out using two different payment cards as this may lead to penalty charges or paying the maximum fare.
You cannot touch in using an Oyster Card and touch out with a Contactless Card. If you are using an Oyster Card, use the same card when touching in and out.
