There are many ways to get around the city, from cycling, walking, and riding public transportation.
Some of the most popular ways of traveling are the classic London red buses and the London Underground, both driven by a transport driver.
However, have you ever tried driverless transport?
Yes, you read that correctly. London has driverless trains called DLR that run through the east and southeast of London in the London Docklands region.
What does DLR stand for London? It means Docklands Light Railway, which is neither a tram nor Tube.
If you want to try riding this innovative public transportation, continue reading this DLR London Guide.
You will read about DLR stations, fares, payments, and many more.

What Is DLR London
DLR is a light metro transport owned by Docklands Light Railway Ltd. It is London’s second rapid-transit system servicing the London Docklands, City of London, and Canary Wharf.
The operation began in 1987 and first started with 11 single-car trains, servicing 15 stations.
Today, it has 45 stations and 148 vehicles, running through seven lines on a 38-km track. The maximum speed is 50 mph or 80 km/hour, garnering a daily average ridership of 340,000.
It is fully autonomous and does not require a train attendant to operate the DLR.
However, you will find train attendants on board who manage the trains and attend to passengers.
To check DLR on the map, look for a turquoise-colored line.
DLR Routes and DLR Stations London
DLR has five routes available: Bank to Lewisham, Bank to Woolwich Arsenal, Stratford to Lewisham, Stratford International to Woolwich Arsenal, and Tower Gateway to Beckton.
The DLR routes are connected to other lines for faster transfers, including London Overground, Elizabeth line, London City Airport, National Rail, London Underground, and Emirates Cable Car.
If you would like to see the stations available on DLR and other public transportation, visit TfL’s Stations, stops & piers page.
For DLR stations and routes, I created a table below for your easy reference. The table lists the five DLR routes and their stations. Moreover, I also included which interchanges are available per station.

To help you find each DLR station, refer to the London DLR Map. The map shows the location of each station and interchange.
DLR Time in London
The best way to get the latest time updates is through the DLR Timetable. From this table, you can select your “From” and “To” stations and click “Show timetable”.
The page also gives you the option to choose the day and time you wish to check.
When you have decided on the station, time, and day, the DLR Timetable shows you a list of available departure and arrival times. The available times are usually serviceable.
However, if you wish to check on the service status of the DLR, check for Status Updates to see if there are minor delays, major delays, or good service status.
In case there are discontinued services, you can get information through Transport for London’s (TfL) planned line closures and service changes.
In the table below, I listed the first and last services of each DLR route to give you an idea of what it looks like on the DLR Timetable.
The table includes departure and arrival times from Monday to Friday, Saturday and public holidays, and Sundays.

How to Pay DLR London
There are several ways to pay for your fare in London. Although you can purchase a paper ticket in cash, cash payment is not the most ideal option since the fares are typically higher. If you want to get the best deal, use London’s payment cards instead.
Travelers can purchase an Oyster Card, Travelcard, or Visitor Oyster Card to pay for DLR fares. You can also use your bank card to pay as long as it is a Contactless Card.
To give you a better comparison of each payment option, refer to the Visitor Oyster Card Vs Oyster Card Vs Travel Card Vs Contactless Card guide.
Here is a brief explanation of what to expect with an Oyster Card, Visitor Oyster Card, Travelcard, and Contactless Card.
Oyster Card
An Oyster Card is an all-in-one card that can be used on a bus, Tube, tram, London Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, River Bus, and most National Rail services.
It is a Pay as you go (PAYG) card that lets you pay for only the journeys you take each time. You need to reload the card to add credit when the card balance is insufficient or zero.
To help you manage your balance, you need to have an Oyster Card account and use the TfL Oyster and contactless app.
The app helps you manage your funds, reload credit, request refunds, and check your transportation history. You can check the Complete Guide To Oyster Card to learn more.
Visitor Oyster Card
A Visitor Oyster Card is made for tourists or people living outside London. The card is purchased in advance before you arrive in London.
You can buy it through the Visitor Shop website, UK locations outside London, and in your country.
After purchasing the card, you can have it delivered to your residence before you head on your trip to London.
The benefits of a Visitor Oyster Card are similar to an Oyster Card since you can use it as a Pay as you go card on buses, trams, Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and most National Rail services in London. The only difference is that it has a £5 non-refundable deposit when you purchase it.
Travelcard
Unlike an Oyster Card and Visitor Oyster Card with a Pay as you go system, a Travelcard gives you unlimited rides for a day, week, month, or year.
Travel as many times and as many stations as you want throughout the date of validity of your Travelcard.
There are three types of Travelcards: Travelcard season tickets, Day Travelcard, and Group Day Travelcard.
Travelcard season tickets can be for seven days, one month, one year, or any duration you desire between 1.5 to 10.5 months.
If you only need a Travelcard for one day, choose a Day Travelcard, which is either an Anytime Day Travelcard or Off-peak Day Travelcard.
Read more about it through the guide Get Unlimited Travel With A London Travel Card.
Contactless Card
The last payment option you can use without purchasing a card is simply using your own bank card with a Contactless feature.
If your bank card has a Contactless symbol (a signal icon with four curved lines), then it is considered a Contactless Card. London public transportation accepts most non-UK bank cards as a mode of payment.
However, it is best to check with your bank issuer if you can use it as a Contactless Card in London.
Contactless Cards are used when you ride the bus, London Underground, London Overground, most National Rail services (London), tram, and DLR.
Read more about using a Contactless Card in the guide How to Use Contactless Card on London Transport.
DLR London Prices
Whether you ride a DLR, Tube, or London Overground, there is no difference in prices since Oyster Cards, Visitor Oyster Cards, Travelcards, and Contactless Cards already have a fixed price for all transportation.
The price only differs on whether it is a Pay as you go card or a Travelcard and the Zones you wish to travel to. Stations in London are divided into nine Zones, from Zone 1 to Zone 9.
When you buy a London card, you can choose to put a fare cap or limit. Furthermore, you can select the Zones you wish to travel to, such as Zone 1, Zone 1 to Zone 2, or Zone 4 to Zone 9.
The cap prices depend on the number of Zones you want to go to.
Generally, the more Zones you travel to, the higher the price. You can learn more about fares when you use the caps and Travelcard prices tool or search for a single journey fare through the Single fare finder tool of TfL.
Before checking the DLR London prices, you need to know first the DLR stations and their Zones.
Check which station and Zone your desired destination is in order to know the price.
Here is a table showing the list of DLR stations and Zones.
