London’s Alternative Festive Experience is back! Street Feast, Backyard Cinema, the Ice Rink, Roller Disco, Plonk Golf, Fairground and, of course, our on-site pub Bar Humbug all return to Winterville. But we’ve added a load of new attractions and events! Here’s just a taster of what’s coming to Clapham Common this festive period…
Come get lost in Backyard Cinema’s Christmas Labyrinth – a huge magical maze featuring a two-screen cinema in the centre of an enchanted forest, a bar, live entertainment and surprises around every corner.
Chivaree Circus debut a brand-new production at Winterville. CRASH involves heart-stopping acrobatics, liquifying aerial dance and eerie balletic pieces to a lyrical electronic soundtrack and is inspired by 19th century french ballet La Sylphide. They say: “The show’s a retelling of a European folktale through impressionist, mix media pop-conceptual circus.” We say: “You had us at acrobatics!”
Kids can hop on board a converted double decker bus and experience Bus King Theatre’s magical puppet show What Is That In My Hat?, before heading upstairs for a puppet-making workshop. (And adults can return in the evening for a more risque puppet show The Disillusioned Illusionist)! Each week Okido host a number of special art and science workshops for children, while one-off special kids shows include a Family Mexican Wrestling Show from the London Lucha League and SPLAT, a new variety extravaganza from acclaimed drag-circus-burlesque-party Mariah & Friendz.
The Mariah & Friendz crew are also bringing back their sell-out adult show to Winterville 2018, with a new edition of their distinctly disturbed take on the holiday season. And fresh from the success of their festival in Brockwell Park this summer, Mighty Hoopla make their Winterville debut with a Christmas Jumpergeddon. More new LGBTQ+ friendly acts at Winterville include U Ok Hun? and The Cocoa Butter Club.
For the first time we’re hosting comedy with a special showcase of Rabbit Rabbit Comedy‘s favourite comedians including Kerry Godliman, Fin Taylor and Tony Laws. And expect more gasps, laughs and tears with the return of Lucha Britannia Mexican Wrestling, speed dating from ‘Dating Against Humanity’ and pop-up street magic demonstrations.
Solo Craft Fair sets up shop in a second Spiegeltent every weekend showcasing local artisans selling a unique range of art, jewellery, ceramics, kids clothing and more, while we also have a series of themed talks from Funzing including ‘The Science Of Santa’, ’Love, Dating & Festive Flirting’ and ‘Christmas Cards From A Killer’.
And the best thing? This isn’t even half of what we’ll have on offer. We’re still to announce our DJs and live shows, as well as our food and drink line-up.
Open 15 Nov – 23 Dec, Winterville is brought to you by the co founders of Field Day, Mighty Hoopla and Street Feast.
See you on the Common! (with a mulled wine)
